Book Blast: Desolation by Travis Simmons

Asher St Paul thought it was just a typical zombie apocalypse like in the movies, until the necromancers crawled out of the woodwork. Since the undead have chased the living into hiding, the necromancers are able to roam freely in a new America of their making. Asher is seeking safe harbor. The need for safety is what drove him from his home in Philadelphia Pennsylvania before it was shelled. He has searched from quarantine to quarantine, always finding them overrun with zombies until he hears of The Refuge, a military compound in Binghamton New York.

With his family and lover lain to rest by his own hand, he has nothing left to lose and gives everything he has to reach the safe haven. But questions arise when he reaches The Refuge, mainly, how has he been able to sustain multiple zombie bites and not change? He thinks he has found safety in the military compound turned quarantine, but he was wrong. Even now there is a necromancer trying to make The Refuge their kingdom of the dead

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I have always been a do-it-yourselfer. I haven’t had any formal education on writing, and I haven’t been raised around writer types. For that matter, I wasn’t even encouraged to read when I was a kid, even though plenty of people in my family read. When I was a teenager, I discovered Cliff’s Notes on Mythology, and it sparked something in me. It was like a floodgate had been opened, and all of these stories started rushing in. I would get ideas at random times, and I would jot them down. I have a pretty big file system of everything I have ever written. Someday I will get to them and put them all into electronic files. There is some good material in there, but there are a lot of bad stories too.
I started writing when I was thirteen or fourteen. At an early age I was already writing books of Saracin (the world The Bonds of Blood takes place in). The first book I wrote of that place was “The Calling of the Two” (not yet released). While I was writing that, I kept thinking of these characters Jovian and Angelica. I knew they had a part to play in the storyline, but they weren’t going to be in the same series. For that matter, they weren’t even going to be in the same age. As I finished the first draft of “The Calling of the Two” I went on to write the first book of Angelica and Jovian’s story. At that time it was The Mirror of the Moon. Later an editor told me it was so massive that I should make the one volume into two, and so The Bonds of Blood was born, and The Revenant Wyrd Saga went from a planned three to six.
That story has taken many forms until now, and I am sure if I didn’t declare that it was “done” it could continue to transform.
Along the way, I discovered my passion for research. I absolutely love researching. It would be nothing for me to sit for days on end, barely eating, just getting up to take care of necessities, and research really odd theories and stories. I get my ideas from them to be honest. Of course, my idea’s are never the main theme of the research I am doing, but it always seems to come from some obscure topic mentioned while I am researching. For instance one book I am outlining now is based on something I heard while watching Ancient Aliens.
Unlike most authors, I have not always loved reading and writing. I hated it until I was in 7th grade. My teacher wanted us to read the entire semester. We would read a book and write in a journal about it. Back then the teachers were allowed to spend more time on what their passions were, and actually foster something in their students, and she did just that. She made me love reading and writing. She told me to go to her book shelf and pick out a book that I was interested in. I found one of my first loves: David Eddings’ Pawn of Prophecy.
Back then I was in remedial reading, and my teacher (Mrs. Peters) would sit with me for the time I was in her classroom, taking turns reading the story out loud with me. We would read where the adventure was taking Garion, and then we would flip to the beginning and look at the map so we could follow them as well.
I think it was at that point, getting lost in a book I love to this day, that I knew I had to do this. I had to create the same magic for others that Mr. Eddings created for me.
At times it is boggling. I have three series of books started, and 2 more forming in my mind (and outlined on the computer). At this point I have to step back and finish the ones I have started before I can let myself move forward.
I feel that I am blessed in being able to write, and forging a life of my passion. It is tough at times, but that is what makes the payoff all the sweeter. The writing business is a huge adventure, trying to figure out what to do and what not to do; when to do things and when not to do anything. Currently I am planning the release of the second book to “The Bonds of Blood”. This is the first time I am armed with the knowledge of what I must do for a book release, and I finally understand why it nerves so many authors up, but it is that excitement that makes me love writing. Every time I hear a reader I don’t know praise my work, it makes my heart race and brightens my day.
Travis is the author of The Bonds of Blood, the first book in his epic fantasy series The Revenant Wyrd Saga. He has also written a young adult novel called A Lament of Moonlight which is book one of his pre-apocalypse series The Harbingers of Light. He is currently seeking publication for the first book of a third series, a zombie novel called Desolation. When he isn’t writing he is helping his family and trying to live a normal, under the radar life. His interests lie in cooking, gardening, green living, and human rights advocacy. He is a huge supporter of the Trevor Project and all agencies that seek to preserve natural resources and protect pets from abuse.”

IXEOS Trilogy by Jennings Wright Book Blast

IXEOS: REBELLION (BOOK TWO)
With rebel leader Darian free at last, the humans and outsiders on Ixeos must find a way to join forces and defeat the Firsts. The problem? All slaves are tracked with GPS, the Firsts are the only ones with power, and roving gangs hate the rebels just as much as they hate the aliens. As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs.
As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they’re pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

Don't forget about the book that started it all...

IXEOS: BOOK ONE
The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose: to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren’t the only problem on Ixeos — the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There’s no way home.

About the Author- Jennings Wright

Born and raised in Rockledge, Florida, Jennings spent her early years reading anything she could get her hands on, when she wasn’t spending time in and on the water. She won a prize in the 6th grade for her science fiction stories.
Jennings attended the University of the South and the University of Tampa, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science, and almost enough credits for B.A.s in both English and History. She spent time over the years doing various kinds of script doctoring, business writing, editing, and teaching writing, but mostly having and raising her family, homeschooling her children, owning and running a business with her husband, and starting a non-profit to Uganda.
Thanks to a crazy idea called NaNoWriMo Jennings got back into creative writing in 2011 and hasn’t stopped since. She’s written four novels and a screenplay in less than a year, with more ideas on the drawing board. She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband, also a writer, and two children, and travels extensively.

What to Read on Vacation

This Thursday, July 3, I will be headed for my family trip throughout Europe!  I love to read books that take place in the countries I am traveling in.  So, the first time I traveled to Paris and throughout Italy, I read Anna and the French Kiss and the 13 Little Envelopes books while on trains and planes and such.  It's just super cool to be reading about the places you've been to or are going to right when you are traveling.  It gets you excited!!

I would love to read some S.A.S.S. books, especially "Spain or Shine" and "Swede Dreams," but I'm not feeling a trip to the library and having to carry them in my bag in addition to a Nook.  Without further ado, here are the books for each city that I may read...

Stockholm- Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

Copenhagen-The Quiet Girl by
Amsterdam- The Diary of Anne Frank, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Interlaken- Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald (close enough)

Marseille- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Barcelona- The Shadow of the Wind by  Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Review- Metamorphasis: Junior Year by Betsy Franco

Metamorphosis: Junior YearMetamorphosis: Junior Year by Betsy Franco

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

He’s a young artist obsessed with myths. But can he fix his own fate? Acclaimed author Betsy Franco and her talented son collaborate on a hip YA novel of "epic" proportions.

Life. Love. Death. Identity. Ovid’s got a lot on his mind, and he pours it all — as confessions, observations, narrative poems, and drawings — into the pages of a notebook. Inspired by his namesake, he wryly records his classmates’ dramas as modern-day Roman mythology. There’s Sophie and Caleb, the Psyche and Cupid of cyber-couples; poetic Paula, who pursues filmmaker Franny like Apollo chasing Daphne; and graphic novelist Duwayne, a Proserpina shuttling between divorced parents. Meanwhile, Ovid hides his own Olympian struggles: his meth addict sister Thena has run off, leaving him with a suffocating home life and a disturbing secret. In her striking YA debut, Betsy Franco introduces an expressive soul with a heartbreakingly authentic voice. Fantastical ink illustrations by her son Tom Franco enhance the intimate tone, delving deep into one intriguing teen’s imagination.

Characters: Sometimes it seemed that there were a bit too many characters for such a small book.  I'm not sure I like Ovid, but I guess that's the point.  He's too pessimistic for my taste, and yet I felt sorry for him.

Plot: All of the characters are intermingled into one plot, Ovid's story.  Personally, the plot was slow.  There is definitely mature content in here, and therefore mature language as well so be aware of that.  If you've ever read any other Betsy Franco, you might be in for a surprise because all of her other books are picture books.  But then again, why would these books have the same audience?

Audiobook: Lets's be honest.  The only reason why I chose to read this book is because James and Dave Franco narrate.  Dave reads more than James.  I think Dave did a nice job playing the tortured teen, but I'm biased because I'm a fan.  Regardless, this book isn't even 2 hours long, so go for it!

Books I Have To Read this Summer

Stupid summer homework.  I know, it's like an oxymoron.  Not in my classes it's not.  I have loads of work for Pysch, Bio, French, and English.

What I must read:

  • Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (English homework)
  • Rewrite Redemption by J.H. Walker (review request)
  • Persephone by Kaitlin Bevis (review request)
  • Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (review request)

I'm hoping these are all good reads, but if a book is a required read for school, you know it must be bad.  Sorry, teachers.

One opportunity to make things right.
One chance to forget the past.

There’s no denying the heat between Jules Taylor and Foster Sutton. They are two wild souls with a fire burning inside. Together, they create a hot and dangerous mix of emotion and lust.

But after a terrible accident leaves one friend dead, Foster is bound by a secret that keeps him from getting closer to Jules. And he’s left with only one thing to offer her – friendship.

For Jules, her relationship with Foster is getting old. He falls down and she picks him up, but they never move forward. Their occasional hook-ups are no longer enough, and Jules vows that this is her summer to forget Foster and find love. If it were only that easy.

Review: Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

Destroy Me (Shatter Me #1.5)Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Summary: Perfect for the fans of Shatter Me who are desperately awaiting the release of Unravel Me, this novella-length digital original will bridge the gap between these two novels from the perspective of the villain we all love to hate, Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.
In Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she’ll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of. . .
Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner’s father, The Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son’s mistakes, it’s clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.
Set after Shatter Me and before its forthcoming sequel, Unravel MeDestroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.
Looks like a lot of fans will be moving over to Team Warner after this read.  In this novella, Warner's real motivations are revealed, and Warner is seen as a sensitive guy who has lots of feelings.  I'm stil Team Adam but no doubt is there a love triangle coming into play.
Also included are Juliette's,Adam's, Warner's, and Kenji's files which is super near to look at.  And as always, Tahereh's lovely writing style is present!

Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, it's a nice bridge between Shatter Me andUnravel  Me.

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary: Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Characters:
Juliette: It's hard not to like this girl. Well, at least it's hard not to feel sorry for her.  She's been an outcast all of her life even though she tries to be good.  That's what I like most about Juliette.
Adam: Is it me or did anyone else constantly think of Superman when you read his name, Adam Kent?  Regardless, I still love this boy.  His relationship with Juliette reminds me of Peeta and Katniss' in that they knew each other when they were younger and the guy fell in love with the girl.  I think it's cute.  The one thing I didn't like though was that these two are way too hot and bothered.  Their hands were all over each other too frequently, making her touch seem less special.

Plot: Thank goodness there is a sequel because the story was just starting to get good at the end.  It seems like there were only a few key events so it makes sense that the book isn't terribly long.  If you like a really good plot, you're going to have to wait for the next book

Writing: Tahereh's writing is absolutely beautiful.  I usually don't like the flowery stuff since I enjoy concision, but it worked in this story.  And I love that there are lines in the book that are crossed out,
so you really know what's on Juliette's mind.

P.S. I went to her book signing, and Tahereh is hysterical.  She told a story about the bird tattoo which made me crack up when I got to that part in the book.  I guess that kind of ruined that part of the book since it was probably supposed to be pretty serious.  If you ever get a chance to see Tahereh, go!!!!

Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, I  think the concept of this book is super neat! It's not your typical YA dystopian.
