Review: The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey

Overall, as you can see by my rating, I really enjoyed The Fifth Wave.  I picked this book up when it first came out because it had been getting good reviews, but I never read it until now to get ready for the movie.  In fact, I wasn't really sure what the book was about until I saw the movie trailer.  

The plot is engaging, and Yancey writes the prose in such a way that is exciting, thrilling, and intense.  Intense enough to make me question what the movie was going to be rated.  The choices for the waves are interesting and very believable of being capable to wipe out the planet.  If I hadn't read a spoiler, I would have been shocked at one of the plot twists.  I was on the edge of the pages of the book it was so exciting.  As another reviewer mentioned this book lies between Ya and adult which was nice since I'm trying to move away from YA.

I enjoyed the characters as well.  Cassie is brave, but I like her humor the most.  She is a bit childish in the beginning, but she was only sixteen then, and she grows over thee course of the book.  However, I have to say my favorite character is Evan.  Though some reviewers said his relationship with Cassie was creepy, I liked him.  Maybe their relationship had an unconventional start, but he treats her well and his flirty sense of humor is appealing.  Another favorite of mine was Ringer who took no nonsense from anyone and was very headstrong.

Go read the book.  It's great.  Don't watch the movie unless it is purely to stare at the beautiful actors.  I will be posting a review of the movie soon.

I am so excited for this movie, and I hope that it does well, though I fear that the target audience is narrow, because Gayle Forman is amazing and kind.  This book and its sequel are some of my favorite books I've ever read.  I don't know if I'll be able to see the movie opening night because college starts that week.  I'm a freshman...



Book Buying Time- Signed Copy of Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth

 

I've been absent for the past few days because I got  oral surgery.  Not wisdom teeth removal, but I have felt like Isla minus finding a charming fellow named Josh.  I have been suffering, not from physical pain but from having to eat oatmeal  and soup more than once a day.  So, as a treat, I've bought myself a signed copy of Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth.  And how do you benefit?  Well, I'll tell you all the details so that you can get your copy too.

 

 

A little while ago, you could preorder a signed copy from Barnes and Noble.  Don't even bother anymore, trust me.  She already signed the 6,000 copies, and they were all ordered.

 

However, you can get a signed copy if you come out to the Four Tour!  But, the Four Tour only consists of four stops.  Surprise, surprise.

You can be a total recluse!  Truly, though, this is the best option because should you attend the event in Lansing, you may be standing if you were not one of the first 100 to buy a ticket.  And, you wouldn't have the option of just getting Four.  You'd get a copy of Starglass by Phoebe North too.

Review: The Giver by Lois Lowry

When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for It Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.


So, I read this because my best friend loves it. And... because the movie comes out really soon.  It has a promising cast, and I might be fairly attracted to Brenton Thwaites.

Originally, I read this when I was in 5th or 6th grade.  I absolutely hated it.  Yet, reading The Giver now, I have such a greater appreciation for it.  This is not a children book.  the writing is juvenile, so it is marketed toward 12+, but the themes are very adult.  May I be so bold as to say that this is among one of the first dystopian novels? I have nothing to support that claim, but I do know this: The Giver came out before The Hunger Games which came out before Divergent.  The Giver and all of these books challenge psychological debates about the relationship between freedom and happiness.

Can you be happy if you give up all your freedom?

Some criticism: I was the same age as Jonas is in the novel when I read this book.  I realize that Jonas was precocious; he had to be to be selected as Receiver, but the rest of us at 12 years old are not aware, for the most part, of the world's evils, its imperfections.  For this reason, I dont think this should have been a kid's book.  I didn't feel that Jonas is relatable at all for kids.

I fully support the changes between the film and book that I've observed from the movie trailers and cast interviews.
1. Jonas and his friends are older.
2. There are action scenes! (I found myself a little bored while reading the book.)
3. Jonas' friends have larger roles (The book is pretty short, so things like characters were expanded to make the movie long enough.)


Overall feelings: I liked it, but not nearly as much as other people have.  It was a quickie (because of its tiny nature) with not enough excitement.  However, it evokes some interesting philosophical questions. I will be reading the rest of The Giver Quartet because I want to finish what I started, and they are easy to read.

A Literary Spin on My High School Graduation

I graduated officially from high school this afternoon.  Yes, I had to wear the abominable, indestructible, ever so flattering (that's sarcasm) articles of clothing called a cap and gown.  But, this spin on honorary cords was pretty cool.  I must give it to you, Mr. K, though I wanted to have easy, simple cords that matched the others, these were memorable.  For one, I had to watch a YouTube video on how to tie a square knot.  Secondly, I pinned it on with a pin that I got from a Cassie Clare book signing where she signed City of Heavenly Fire.  It was an awesome event, one that I look back on positively since I got to talk with Cassie, unlike the TMI mall tour, and realized she's not a *EXPLICIT*.  She seemed to really love interacting with her fans, so I'm blaming the lameness of the mall tour on the sponsor Rue21. Grrrr!!

Review: The Fault in Our Stars Movie

Hey nerdfighter,

If you're reading this, you may have already seen the movie, but you also may have not.  Probably the latter because who looks at reviews after they have already decided to watch it?

Anyway, the movie was great. But, I am a big fan of the book. Josh Boone made sure that it was close to the book's plot.  Of course, some things had to be cut out for the sake of time, but nothing critical was missing. 

Favorite things about the movie: relationship between Hazel and her parents, the scenery in Amsterdam, ANSEL (I was smiling the whole time he and Shai were falling in love.)

Least favorite things about the movie: Isaac's lack of screen time; that the scene from the trailer where Isaac says,"Gus talks about you a lot, you know," and Hazel replies,"We're just friends," isn't in the movie; and that the part where Hazel and Gus make an ad for her swing set isn't in it either.

Even if you haven't read the book, this is a great romance.  It will alter your perceptions, and be prepared to be sad.  Overall, the movie is getting awesome reviews.  As of this moment, 82% of critics like it on Rotten Tomatoes.  If you don't want to see it in theaters because you will be surrounded by crying, young girls, I suggest seeing it in a couple of weeks just before it leaves theaters or rent it on DVD.  However, you don't want to miss this one.  The Fault in Our Stars is the best YA book to film adaptation I've seen.

The Night Before Our Stars

Last night, I saw the much anticipated The Fault in Our Stars film adaptation.  And it was WONDERFUL!

I went to the "special" showing so that I would be one of the first to see the movie.  This included a live streaming with the cast of the movie (a Q and A) and live performances from Birdy and Nat and Alex Wolf.  And the movie was shown before all of this extra stuff.

In my opinion, the "extras" were not worth it.  Oh wait, I did get the opportunity to see John Green's cameo in which he played a middle aged father to a girl that, asks Hazel about the tubes in her nose.  The scene was where Hazel lets the girl try her oxygen tubes on.  Though John Green's performance was stellar, this was a cut scene.  It had no place in the film.  It wouldn't have fit well because it wasn't a necessary, crucial moment.  Okay, I'll also admit that John Green was his usual, awkward self.

But that wasn't the best part about the Night Before Our Stars.

Birdy was amazing live, but when Alex Wolf played his song, the sound wasn't working.  The audience could hear him singing and see him strumming away at his guitar, but the microphone near the guitar was giving the show difficulty.  That Alex's performance turned into acapella though his body indicated the guitar being played for a minute was so funny to me.  Anyone else?

That's pretty much what happened at the Night Before Our Stars, so if you were bummed about not being able to attend, don't be. If I would have known, I would have gone to the movies tonight 6/6.  

As I said, I really liked the movie, so I'll mention a few thoughts on it in another post.

Cassandra Clare Book Signing

You guys, I'm not dead. But I may be out of practice regarding posts.

Cassandra Clare's signing was tonight at a middle school in West Chester, Pa.  To the person who asked the question, "Why West Chester?," I couldn't agree more.

Surprisingly, my only problems on the road were traffic, which I can't control, and and getting beeped at for trying to get the E Z pass to work. To my chagrin, I had to pay the toll. FAILURE.

So, I ended up getting there like a half hour early.  In the back I sat with my invisible friends. But really, I couldn't get any friends to go with it being the night before prom.  Because prom is so important...

As the crowd started rolling in, I watched them.  Middle school girls with their poor mothers (If you're one of these people, please thank them for taking you. It was not a short night.), but all I saw were prospective people to whom I could give my books to get signed.  See, there was a 3 books per person limit. I had 5.

If I weren't a girl, I think I may have felt pedophilic.  Nonetheless, I felt old.  There were a few older women who were into the series and even a few males, but for the most part the audience was a group of hyper young girls.  They cheered and giggled at Cassandra's playful remarks. And it was really cute.

Jenny Han, author of The Summer I Turned Pretty series moderated the question session.  Cassandra talked about her current projects, The Dark Artifices and The Magisterium (written with Holly Black), and the typical questions you can find on the FAQ of her website  Then, there was the sillier portion of the session when Jenny asked her to play Kiss, Marry, Kill.  The best round of this game was Jace, Simon, Alec. She would kiss Jace, marry Simon, and have to kill herself before she killed Alec.

About 315 people bought tickets.  I don't know how many showed up, but there were a lot of people there to say it simply.  Thank goodness I don't procrastinate when I want something because the line began with who bought her ticket first:) 

And because I know you're curious, yes I did get all my books signed and now have a complete first edition set of her work because I am so artful.  I got up from my seat and didn't move toward the line until I saw someone with less than 3 books in their hands.  1 strike, but then I found the lovely Maria.  And that is how you make the system work for you.

Cassie spent a surprisingly long amount of time talking with everyone.  Of course, at these things, a long time is, what, thirty seconds? She liked my City of Bones movie tee shirt, asked me if I had already read CoHF ( I admitted I hadn't and had only just finished the fabulous City of Fallen Angels audiobook), and I talked to her about BookCon which I really should be preparing for by going to bed now.  It's going to be a long but fun day.

Overall, I'm really glad I went.  It was much better than the rushed CoB movie mall tour.  I had been associating Cassandra with that disappointing event, and I'm glad that she really is personable.

When school ends, I'm going to destroy the rest of the series.  Though, CoHF is enormous.

Are You Divergent?

Taking a break from writing my essay, I took a quiz to find out which faction I would belong to.  I think we are all a little of each, so I wasn't surprised that I turned out to be divergent.  Are you?  Take the quiz here.  And will you be seeing Divergent on premiere night?

I'm going to a special Divergent movie release event at the Neshaminy Mall Barnes & Noble.  There will be martial arts instructors for Dauntless training, games and prizes.  And a completely different author, who is not Veronica Roth but Maria Snyder, author of Inside Out will be signing at the same time.  Yeah, I wonder how awkward this will be too.

 

The Feels

I haven't blogged in a bit, but it was necessary after watching the The Fault in Our Stars trailer.

Okay, now that you have watched it, are you not excited?  I think I just fell in love with a fictional character and the actor portraying him again. I'm anticipating this one because the book went through the full spectrum of emotions.  Happiness, sadness, love, laughter.  I think this is a book and movie that everyone can enjoy.  John Green is amazing.

I probably shouldn't be laughing: The Fault in Our Stars Movie

I like the tag line.  It's punny, but I definitely understand that some people don't.  Cancer is a touchy subject of course, but that's the whole point of the novel.  John Green shows that books about cancer don't have to be complete tearjerkers.  It's such a beautiful story.  I'm excited for the movie.  I love the casting!

I like the tag line. I found it dark and angry in the same way that Hazel is (at least at times) dark and angry in her humor. I mostly wanted something that said, "This is hopefully not going to be a gauzy, sentimental love story that romanticizes illness and further spreads the lie that the only reason sick people exist is so that healthy people can learn lessons." But that's not a very good tag line. I like the tag line because it says, literally, the sick can also have love stories. Love and joy and romance are not just things reserved for the well.

Shailene Woodley's thoughts:

I had a really strong response to it. It's definitely - it's not a tagline that I probably would have chosen by any means. But I think that there's so many people who are so passionate about this book that there's nothing that will ever satisfy everyone. So I think it was just up to the discretion of the marketing mavens. For me, it was - yeah, not something I would have chosen. But it seems like half the people love it and half the people don't like it.

James Dashner Signing

This week, I've concluded that children's authors are the nicest human beings on the planet.

This is one of the first times that I didn't grab all of the author's books before the signing.  I wasn't sure I would even go.  My friend bailed on me for homework, so I decided to go alone.

I absolutely hate Doylestown parking, especially when it is cold out.  I walked as fast as my legs could I go from like 5 blocks away.

Regardless, the line was huge!! Afterward, I realized that it was because so many parents with their kids were in line too.  Still, I waited over an hour to meet Mr. Dashner because he took the time to speak with everyone for a good 2 minutes.  Now, that doesn't seem long, but when you compare it to the usually,"Hey, how are you? Thanks for coming," it's an eternity.  But a refreshing eternity because Mr. Dashner is funny and great with kids.  He took photos and signed all books.  

My conversation with him was pretty nerdy, but typical of me.  He was impressed that I had a first printing of The Maze Runner.  He doesn't even have a copy.  When it first came out, he gave them out to his friends and family.  And he asked me if I was sick of iCarly jokes.  I don't get them too often, but at least people know how to spell my name now.

The Doylestown Bookshop was awesome as always.  Mr. Dashner didn't read from The Eye of Minds or even talk about it.  It was just a signing, but the bookstore had Jules' pizza and chocolate for the kiddies.  

Last thing- I checked out Mr. Dashner's tour schedule for The Eye of Minds.  25 cities in a month!  He deserves a break!!

That was Intense

DIVERGENT TRAILER.  Added today!!!!! Just watch it!

WHOA! That looks much more thrilling than the book.  For me, the book was boring because I hate books where the whole plot is the character getting used to a new setting.  Frankly, reading about Tris making new friends was not the most invigorating, but I really liked the premise of the story.  Read the review here.
 I am, however, currently reading Insurgent.  I have not spoiled the ending for myself yet...

Now I'm pretty excited about the movie, but Theo James looks way too old to be Four.  I'm not denying his attractiveness, but he looks like an old man next to Shailene.

Mail Time!

So annoyed.  I bought Allegiant by Veronica Roth the day of the midnight premiere from Anderson's Bookshop in Downer's Grove.  I have bought books from their Napersville location so I had confidence in their service.  Three weeks later, I got the book.  And that was after 2 calls.  Their "shipping was backed up." Ugh, when I called the  the second time, they had no record of my order.  Why? They spelled my name wrong!!!!!!

Sorry for the rant! It had to come out.

Hopefully, I'll start this one soon.  Hello Thanksgiving 2 days off!!!

Review: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

In this classic of the 1960s, Ken Kesey's hero is Randle Patrick McMurphy, a boisterous, brawling, fun-loving rebel who swaggers into the world of a mental hospital and takes over. A lusty, life-affirming fighter, McMurphy rallies the other patients around him by challenging the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched. He promotes gambling in the ward, smuggles in wine and women, and openly defies the rules at every turn. But this defiance, which starts as a sport, soon develops into a grim struggle, an all-out war between two relentless opponents  Nurse Ratched, back by the full power of authority, and McMurphy, who has only his own indomitable will. What happens when Nurse Ratched uses her ultimate weapon against McMurphy provides the story's shocking climax.

Wow, this is one of the best school reads I have been assigned!

Characters: If you haven't read the book and only saw the movie, you would think that McMurphy is the main character.  But Chief Bromden is the one who is the main character.  If you want analysis on this book, I'll post it, but all in all, the characters have a lot of personality.  They'll certainly give you a laugh.  These men have their weaknesses, and McMurphy helps them stand up to the evil Nurse Ratched.

Plot: Having Bromden, who pretends to be deaf and dumb, narrate the book is genius.  This story is heart-warming, seeing the men unite and fight for themselves!  Even though the ending is bittersweet, it is fitting. It is, thus, memorable.  

Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, this book is actually written in modern English, and the witty characters will keep your attention.

Before you find out how their story ends, remember how it began....

All he knows is that he is once again alone, and that he needs to find a girl named Lulu. They shared one magical day in Paris, and something about that day—that girl—makes Willem wonder if they aren’t fated to be together. He travels all over the world, from Mexico to India, hoping to reconnect with her. But as months go by and Lulu remains elusive, Willem starts to question if the hand of fate is as strong as he’d thought. . . .

The romantic, emotional companion to Just One Day, this is a story of the choices we make and the accidents that happen—and the happiness we can find when the two intersect.

Characters: If you didn't finish Just One Day thinking that Willem was a jerk, then something is wrong with you.  In Just One Year, he has family issues and hopes to find happiness.  He tries hard to find find Lulu, and just like her, he ends up discovering himself.  He has some great quotes that are sometimes melancholy, but very thought-provoking.  Gayle Forman is great!!! But at times, Willem irked me.  He more than interacted with other girls as a distraction, but if he really loves Lulu why would he do that? If love is that strong, wouldn't it be the ever present motivation to find her?  I suppose that is too idealistic, but these ideas of commitment and true love are the reasons why I read romances! And finally, I loved Kate.  She is a great friend to Willem, giving him advice and supporting his acting.

Plot: What the heck was that ending?!!?!?!? I thought this series was going to be a trilogy!!! How can I be satisfied with that ending? Gayle Forman said that she wants readers to think about the ending they want for the characters.  Hey can just think about it or write it in fanfic.  Yes, I did read someone's alternative ending to the story.  It was cute, but it was my first time reading any fanfic, and I just have to say that some people should never write.  Absolutely terrible stuff exists for the public, but the ending of the series I read wasn't too bad.  It was just that the dialogue didn't seem like something Allison or Willem would say or how they would say it.

Would I recommend it to a friend? Well, if you read Just One Day, which was really beautiful if you haven't read it, you kinda have to read this one!! I talked to so one else, and she loved the ending, so don't let my anger over it dissuade you.  It's still thought-provoking and sweet, very Gaylesque .

I HAVE A FAN!: Lauren Kate Book Signing

Yesterday, Lauren Kate, author of the Fallen series and now Teardrop, came to my local Barnes and Noble.  The last time I picked up Fallen was when it came out.  I never continued with the series until last month in anticipation of going to the signing with my friend, Danielle, a major fan of Fallen.  I'm barely into Passion, and the ending of the series has been spoiled.

Before I went, I watched an interview of Lauren talking about her inspiration.  So, she was crying one day, really frustrated while writing Torment.  Her husband couldn't understand her, and she couldn't understand him, like the tears were a physical barrier separating the two of them. Her husband reached out and took one of her tears and placed near his eye, and then they just connected. I thought this was the most bizarre thing Id ever heard, and I am ad that when she told this story at the signing that she admitted it was the "weirdest, sexiest thing that's ever happened to [her]." I am reassured that she is sane for admitting it was weird:)

Lauren Kate was super sweet and funny.  She was talking about her research for Teardrop, reading all kinds of books about Atlantis.  When she said that she even read the cultish ones and that she didn't discriminate, I cracked up! She was just so cute!  It must be a rule that you must be funny and nice to be an author.  There have only been a few to have broken my hypothesis (Ahem Stephenie Meyer, Nicolas Sparks, and Cassandra Clare).

I bet you are intrigued by my heading.  This was definitely the coolest thing that has happened to me as a Twitter user/ blogger so far.  Someone recognized me from my Twitter picture and was already following! Woah!!! She was pretty sweet too.  Go follow her on Twitter @fallen_mgrl ! I can't stress it enough: Reading brings people together! I guess I reluctantly should add that so does social media:( I've found people's pictures on Twitter of them at book signings and then realized that I was there too, but I have never had this happen.  I feel kinda famous even though this girl follows anyone that's ever had one good tweet. Hahahahaha

Please excuse my emo hair.  I'm in need of a haircut(hairstyle recommendations welcome) and it was an all around bad hair day.

Gayle Forman Signing Tonight

I've been busy these days, so the blog has become promoville, I know.  I've actually been to quite a few signings recently, but I haven't recapped them all.  Hopefully, I'll catch up on that soon, but I just wanted to let you know that I'll be seeing Gayle tonight.  So now, you have some useful info if you plan on stalking me.  I'll be back to blog soon!

I almost forgot to mention that I am so excited to read this new book.  I started just a little, and perhaps I'll finish Just One Year this weekend?
