She sat at the opposite side of the bar. Her blond hair hung in a ponytail, allowing me to see the edges of a tattoo on her right shoulder blade. She was out of place. The bar didn’t have a formal dress code, but women didn’t walk through the doors unless their make-up was just so and every hair in its right place. Their clothes were low cut, tight, and revealing—very little was left to the imagination.
Her manner of dress differed. She wasn’t slovenly or dirty, but her black tank top and faded jeans didn’t match the ambiance. She wasn't wearing any make-up. She didn’t seem to be overly concerned with attracting the attention of any of the athletes either. Most of the women giggled a little too loudly, their gazes scanning desperately around the room, hoping to contact with someone famous. They always seemed to be moving too, pacing back and forth in front of whoever needed to notice them.
About the Author:  
In 2009, eTreasures Publishing published my first novel, a sci fi adventure story.  Since then, they have published my two YA zombie novels, my religious zombie novella, two children’s picture books, and two novellas with romantic elements.  I have an urban fantasy novel about dragons and a vampire novelette that was published by MuseItUp Publishing.  Musa Publishing has published my novelette with romantic elements and a collection of short stories.  I have a middle grade urban fantasy novel that was published by Little Devil Books.  My nonfiction book about slasher films was published by Scarecrow Press.
Writing is my passion.  I enjoy creating fantastic worlds and memorable characters.  I’m an active promoter of my works and love to talk to readers at book signings and readings.  Doing giveaways on Goodreads has been an exciting experience, and having contests for readers has been fun.  I actively promote various authors on my blog and participate in blog tours to promote my own work.
I write under several different pen names.  For my children’s titles, I write under J.D. Pooker, and for my YA and adult novels, I write under Pembroke Sinclair.  My nonfiction work is done under my real name.
I am a member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and am on a committee to create membership criteria for iPAL, which is a sister group to the Published Authors Liaison group and focuses on independent and self-published authors.  I am also a member of the ALA and really enjoy doing library visits.

Nicholas Sparks Event

I got back from the event a little while ago, and it was quite interesting.  It was at the Free Library in Philadelphia, and it was an hour of Q and A followed by a meet and greet.

I had planned on going to this Nicholas Sparks event with my friend, but then I got stuck with two tickets when plans changed.  My poor parents took me to the event.  They really are the greatest.  I keep calling this thing that I attended an event and not a signing since no books were signed, The Longest Ride came already signed, and no posed photos were allowed: (

Nicholas walked onto the stage and spread his arms out like Jesus on the cross, bowing, for the claque.  Then, he blew kisses to the audience.  Mother and I just looked at each other and gave the "This is weird" look.  Yeah, you know the one.

I was impressed by Nicholas' talent.  He knows a great deal about writing and made great allusions, even mentioning Strunk & White which I really appreciated, but at the same time the man looves himself!  I had heard that he was a jerk, but he wasn't quite.  While he was arrogant, he did seem kind.  For example, a 6th grade teacher asked him how she could get her students to learn about voice, and he took the time to think about it and said to have them pretend that the students are at school and their parent walks into their room and to think of what the parent would say.  They could say,"This room is a mess," and so on.  Then, other times he would joke about being placed between Shakespeare and Steinbeck at Barnes and Noble.

I'm not a Nicholas Sparks fanatic, but I have read about 5 of his books.  They are a nice escape for me, even if he uses the same formula over and over.  He has an enormous amount of success with the books, movies, his own school, his own charity, the upcoming Broadway production of The Notebook, and the upcoming TV show.  When Father was waiting outside while Mother and I were watching the Q and A, he talked with an employee.  The employee noted that these authors that gain a lot of attention, but aren't particularly writers that will withstand time tend to be the ones with attitudes.  I find this kind of true with my experiences i.e. Stephenie Meyer and sorta Cassandra Clare.
 
I hope to be as successful as he is in the future, but I'd like to do it with a humbler approach.  I promise that I'll sign anything you want and take pictures if I get quasi famous or famous for that matter.

And I didn't stay for the quick "hi and bye" meet and greet.  If I couldn't get a selfie with the guy, what's the point?

I'll be selling my extra signed copy on ebay, so watch out! Yeah, I'm down $35 so I'm not doing a giveaway.  I'm sorry!

 “Princess wants to have fun,” he says, leading me toward the kitchen, and past Ryan and that stupid bitch who still hasn't let go of his neck.
With every step that brings me closer to Ryan, my heart rate speeds up little by little. Brushing past them, a calloused finger reaches out, wrapping itself around my pinky. His touch sends waves of heat and bolts of anger through my entire body. I don’t want him touching me, but my body craves it. The more distance I put between us the farther our arms must stretch to keep the contact.
And we do for as long as possible.

A quick look back and I find Ryan’s arm reaching out, his index finger slipping from its grip on my pinky. We lose contact and suddenly I’m not nearly drunk enough for this shit. Turning my attention toward the kitchen, I bring the bottle of whiskey to my lips intent on making everything so blurry I won’t be able to remember what Ryan’s touch feels like.

Jackson nodded and lifted his hand again. I stepped forward, swallowing any doubt as he reached out, one hand cupping my cheek, the other grasping my hand lightly, tracing circles with his thumb and before I could worry about how those circles made me melt inside, the memory slammed into me.

"Margaret!" Gemma shouted with glee. "Come out of there, I know you are trying to scare me!"

I watched the young red-haired girl put her hands on her hips, trying to be brave. She scanned their father's study, narrowing her eyes. The fire roaring in the hearth was the only source of light in the room, casting dark shadows across the furniture.

Maggie hid behind her father's chair, in silent wait for her prey.

"I'm going to tell Mother!"

Maggie's little hands tightened on the chair but she didn't make a sound. I walked over to her, watching her mouth twist up into a sly grin. She was the older of the girls, but she protected her sister fiercely, proclaiming she was the only one who could tease her. Gemma hated when Maggie played games, but it thrilled Maggie no end and I could feel excited anticipation roll off her in waves.

Gemma's bravery faltered as she stepped forward toward the overstuffed armchair, expecting her sister to jump out at her at any moment.

But Maggie waited. She had incredible patience, but I sensed that part of it was stubbornness and a desire to test boundaries. Her head poked out from behind the chair just as Gemma turned toward the love seat. I watched as Maggie slowly came out of her hiding spot and charged at her sister.

Gemma let out a scream but Maggie covered her sister's mouth with her hand.

Both girls collapsed on the floor, Gemma's muffled squeals threatening to break through Maggie's tiny fingers.

"Shh," Maggie cooed.

Gemma managed to wrestle her mouth away from Maggie's hand. "I hate you!" Her indignation faltered into a fit of giggles and Maggie quickly joined her.

As she helped her sister up from the floor Maggie said, "Gemma. You need to always expect the unexpected. You can't go through life being scared all the time." Even though Maggie was a mere nine years old, she spoke as if she'd lived lifetimes before. It was one of the things that drew me to her more than any other Prognatum I'd watched.

Maggie took a handkerchief and wiped her sister's cheeks.

"A lady wouldn't do that to her sister," Gemma said, finally relaxing.

"I don't want to be a lady," Maggie stated firmly. "I want to see the world and not just make babies for the rest of my life."

Gemma shook her head. "That's what we are supposed to do. That's what Mother does."

Maggie's indignation flowed through her and into me. I knew Maggie was born to follow through with her Prognatum duties, she just didn't know it yet. It was rare for a Prognatum to want the Guard position but Maggie would be thrilled when her father revealed it to her at seventeen.

As Maggie reached down to help Gemma up from the floor she whispered, "It's not for me."

Gemma wrapped her sister in a tight hug. "I will love you either way, dear sister."

Maggie rested her head against Gemma's shoulder. "I love you too."

I fell out of the memory just as quickly as I'd fallen in, my legs shaking.

Now, over two years later, I'm excited to re-vamp the series leading up to the release of book 4, TTYL. Next time she takes a pen name, she’s totally going with Smith or Jones.

I think I'm going to buy an All the Feels shirt, but they're all so adorable.  I'll wear it to Gayle's book signing in Haverford on Oct 15.  So excited for Just One Day!!!

She now lives in coastal VA, a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean, with her two adorable children.
